This little
1920s German jack o' lantern measures 3 3/4 inches tall. In delicate, all original condition, he's one of my favorite Halloween pieces. These types of lanterns were made in the thousands some 80 years ago, but their fragility, along with the fact that they were intended to be used with real candles inside, makes them scarce today.
He's cute, what is it made out of?
ReplyDeletei think he's papier mache. it's very thin.
DeleteI guess it must have been made for American customers. As far as I know Halloween was never celebrated in Germany...or were my parents keeping it a secret from us?
ReplyDeleteNo, you are correct: the Germans did not celebrate Halloween themselves. They made and exported literally tons of Halloween stuff to the United States though.
DeleteBeautiful collectible Tracy! The German, vintage decorations are highly sought after. I see these lanterns from time to time but am never sure if they are the real ones or counterfeit ones.
ReplyDeleteHi Brian! Yep, a lot of antique Halloween stuff is being reproduced now, especially the lanterns. I try to buy only from dealers I know are reputable; that helps stave off the repros somewhat. But it is getting harder and harder to find good old pieces.
